The federally funded Head Start program opened in White Settlement ISD in January 2002. Pre-school children who turn three or four years of age by Sept. 1 of each school year can qualify for the program on the basis of age, income and family size. Children can attend Start from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program provides nutritious meals, health screenings, family services and services for special needs children.

Students eligible for the WSISD pre-kindergarten program and Head Start will attend pre-kindergarten at the Head Start building, located at 728 Comal adjacent to Special Programs. (The district currently offers pre-kindergarten at four of its elementary schools.)

In a collaboration between Head Start and WSISD, two licensed, certified WSISD teachers instruct students at Head Start for part of the day, enabling the kids to be well-prepared for kindergarten in WSISD. These children are also taught the Head Start curriculum by Head Start employees.

Head Start provides four classrooms and is staffed by 4 lead teachers, 4 teaching assistants, a cook and a housekeeper. Minnie Edwards, the Family Services advocate, is available to help families with registration and economic and social needs.
